How to Write a CV

A great CV can occasionally secure you a job itself, especially if you are applying for contract work and especially so in a technical role. At the very least a CV will ensure you promote yourself as best as possible and will assist in securing interviews.

There is no single way to construct a CV, it is ultimately up to you how it is structured however we have attached two suggested CV formats depending on whether you wish to emphasize your skills or your experience.

In addition to your CV why not go one step further and compliment it with a comprehensive personality profile. Learn more about this by clicking inspirediscprofile now.

General tips:

  • Your CV should be laser printed in black ink using a plain typeface, on good quality A4 white/cream paper. Decorative borders are not required nor or photographs.
  • Your CV should ideally cover no more than two pages and never more than three. The content must be clear, concise and relevant. Use bullet points rather than full sentences where possible.
  • Tailor your CV to each application
  • ALWAYS proof read the CV for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes and ensure it makes sense. Consider getting an ‘independent’ party to review the whole document before submitting it.
  • Remember that when writing your CV it is essentially marketing you and that a potential employer will use the information provided to form questions for the interview. Gaps in history should be explained and inaccuracies or falsehoods avoided at all costs.
  • There is no reason to include reasons for leaving previous jobs within your CV although be prepared to answer these questions in the interview.
  • Do not include your current salary details.
  • Always accompany your CV with a well written letter or e-mail. (see covering letter for more information)
